I didn’t know anyone when I came to Ioannina two years ago—I moved here, alone, from another part of Greece—guided by my love of nature and an intuition that Epirus was where I was meant to be.

Originally from the USA, I’m a Greek-American with roots in the Peloponnese, so I’ve always felt drawn to Greece’s wild beauty and ancient lore: the mountains, the freshwater rivers, the herb-covered hills and forests that nourished my paternal ancestors. But there is something special about Epirus, and Ioannina in particular. This city is full of inspiration: hidden corners to discover in the castle and old town; delicious restaurants and fresh, local produce; a forest in the heart of the city. And sacred places like Dodoni, Acherontas, and Tzoumerka are only a stone’s throw away.

As an artist and herbalist, my creative work is rooted in Greek mythology and the Mediterranean landscape, so being close to nature is vital inspiration for my work. I use multiple mediums — writing, dance, music, photography, digital and botanical art — to explore how myths are not just stories created by humans, but are actually traditions growing from the earth itself. (I share my work on Greek mythology and herb lore via my blog, podcast, and online shop at https://mkarakitsou.com.)

But despite my magnetism to this region’s nature, it’s really the C.Ioannina community that has made Ioannina feel like my home.

Through our shared space, I’ve met some of the most generous and unique people from all over the world. Our events and social clubs, as well as the deep friendships I’ve made here, have shaped my experience of living in Epirus.

I also run the arts and crafts club at C.Ioannina, where we experiment with different mediums each month. I believe it’s a human need to create—it’s just a matter of discovering the craft that suits you best. Our club is a great way to explore art without pressure and have fun using your hands again. I hope you’ll join us!
